Renwood, “Sierra Series”, Zinfandel, Sierra Foothills 2002 ($7.50) – Dark ruby color with an over-ripe raspberry nose, intense raspberry and blackberry flavors with oak and drying tannins, finishing a bit hot. Can’t complain too much at this price, but disappointing given better Zin’s I’ve had from this producer. Score: 7.5/10
Zinfandel is good for you!
I knew there was some other reason my favorite wines are Zinfandel’s. Scientist have found compounds in the wine to be a cholesterol fighter. What is even more surprising is the second place grape is Syrah (a.k.a. Shiraz), which is my second favorite followed by Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. Huge Johnson has a nice digest here; the source material is here.
Winecast 31 – Napa Valley Zin
The second in my 3-part series reviewing the wines tasted on my recent Napa Valley trip. This time I talk about the modern history of the Napa Valley and taste some surprising Zinfandel’s made there. I also announce a new poll at the blog.

Ballentine Vineyards, Zinfandel Port 2003
Ballentine Vineyards, Zinfandel Port, Napa Valley, Estate Grown 2003 ($25/375ml) – Deep garnet color, fresh boysenberry nose, intensely sweet boysenberry flavors but does not taste like 10% RS. Reminiscent of “late harvest” style Zin’s from the 1970’s. Only available at the winery or to wine club members. Score: 8.5/10
Renwood, “Old Vine” Zinfandel 2002
Renwood, “Old Vine” Zinfandel 2002 ($20) – Dark ruby color, herb and blackberry aromas, boysenberry and plum flavors with a bit of oak and ripe tannins. Nice berry finish. Delicous. Score: 9/10
