I liked the wine tasting. I wouldn’t mind one on each show or every other show. Your descriptions are very… descriptive. Keep up the good work.
I liked the real-time nature of the tasting, although I don’t intend to listen in real time to the show. It’s revealing how one struggles to find words to describe what one is tasting. Also shows how the wine may change from one’s first impression to later impressions. These facts don’t come out so clearly if the tasting is done in advance and the notes are “cleaned up”.
Might be nice to decant the wine in advance … or to taste the wine over a longer period, say an hour or a day. Of course, you’d have to edit the program, and it couldn’t be listened to in real time if you did that, but it might make clearer that wine tends to deepen in the glass.
You could also do cross-tastings of wine at “room temperature” (70 deg.) vs. “cellar temperature” (55-60 deg.) I know I find that most reds are served overly warm. A show where you are actively tasting the difference might make the point that having a red too warm flattens the flavors, etc.
Great comments, Doug; thanks. I will work in the room temp vs. cellar temp into an upcoming show. I am spoiled in that I drink my wine at cellar temp and it really does affect the taste a bit more than you might think.
The tasting feature was quite helpful. I particularly enjoyed your choice of wines, which allowed for an interesting comparison across countries and styles, backed by the history on chardonnay. Your tasting method and your comments while tasting, I think, would be a great feature for the show. Thanks for your podcast!
I really liked the tasting show. One thing I liked about it was that it was a little more “you” than some of the rest of the show. When you’re describing the history and background of a certain varietal, it’s obvious that you’re reading it, or that it was rehearsed. The “on the spot” nature of the virtual tasting made me really enjoy getting more “real” about it. Dont know if that made sense… but there you go. That’s my thoughts.
In an email to you, I suggested a full tasting periodically (I voted for once a month) but also a one bottle tasting each show – maybe of the same kind that you are covering in the show. You don’t have that option in your poll – perhaps you could add it as a “yes/no” question.
When I taste wine, I experience my impressions immediately, in real time. I think that’s what I liked about your first virtual tasting. I would prefer to hear your impressions in “real-time” as often as you can. It’s nice to hear honest first impressions much like we might experience on our end. Thanks for what you do. Please keep doing this podcast.
