Today’s show is a bit different from my normal format of talking about a wine varietal or region, into what I hope will be a monthly feature I’m calling vintner profile. The idea is to give you the back-story directly from the people in the business, both winery owners and winemakers. In this first outing, I talk with one of the great gentlemen of the California wine business, Jim Concannon from Concannon Vineyard in Livermore, CA. With St. Patrick’s Day later this week, I though Concannon, America’s first Irish winery, would be a great place to start this series.

Jim Neal, Chariot, “Diana”, California 2002 ($15) – An interesting blend of Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Darkest purple color, black in the center; fresh blackberry jam aromas with a hint of black pepper. Big, jammy blueberry fruit flavors with spice and rich mouthfeel. Delicious, but I’m a sucker for this type of wine. Score: 9/10
I recommend to stock up, if you see this one on your wine store shelves, along with some more Chariot Sangiovese

Kempton Clark, Dunnigan Hills, Petite Sirah 2001 ($11) - From a Zinfandel specialist and second label of R. H. Phillips.
As Agent Cooper from Twin Peaks would say, “black as the night sky on a moonless night”. Intense pepper and oak aromas, deeply wound fruit, pepper and oak with the typical silky Pet mouthfeel. Long, spicy finish. Delicious now but a good cellar selection. Too bad this wine was corked during my Petite Sirah tasting as this would have taken “Best of Tasting” honors.
If this is what they do with Petite Sirah, I look forward to tasting their Zin! Score: 9/10
