Rod: I think this is very significant and we'll see a lot of good things happen for both consumers and small to medium sized wineries.

Crystal: I see wine portals like americanwinery.com, calwineries.com and appellationamerica.com as mostly places for consumers to discover new wines. Most of their traffic will come from web search and they hope to monetize their site with wine sales. Amazon is not about discovery, it's about selling stuff.

el jefe: I agree there will be a place for specialists in the post-Amazon wine world but they will have to be at the top of their game to prosper. And I think Amazon will have another version of Prime for wine, but it's not going to be $79 ;-)

There are all sorts of interesting niches available in this business. I think an outfit that tries to play it generic is at risk of being run over by a big player like amazon.com - but a specialist can continue to personally serve their customer base and be successful. Much the same as the book biz. The real question is - will amazon.com be smart enough to extend Amazon Prime to wine shipping...?

How does a site like AmericanWinery.com play into this? It seems like they are well on the way to being a part of the long tail wine movement.

Nice analysis. You could be right on this one. The mainstream thoughts I've read about this have all been centered on the impact of Amazon putting pressure to fix the distribution laws, not the long tail. Thanks.
