Arthur and Catie,

I agree that scores are with us for the forseeable future but that there is also a future without scores. I will focus on the descriptions and color from now on but also provide a score until times change...

You wondered about Hunter Thompson...
Dr. Debs wondered about Nigella...
Over at the WW2 Grape Vine, John and Yoko would have had a sit-in at the Wine Spectator office.

Hi All,
It's key to write up wines in a manner that tells the reader as much about the wine as possible (and in as much detail). You can still use numbers as a reference point without being overly technical or clinical. The essence of the review is the description. The tangents, I think, add color, character and define a style. The more involved wine consumer wants to know what they will get in a bottle of wine. Still, some in the general public just want you to tell them what "THE BEST" wine is. To serve the needs of the full spectrum of wine enthusiasts, scores will probably not fall by the wayside entirely but the onus is on all of us to be as descriptive as possible.

Glad that the post caught your interest, Tim. I think the most important thing is that the blogging world doesn't get completely caught up in copying those magazine review style soundbites--and I include myself in this! Blogging is an enormously flexible medium. We should take advantage of it, and the lines of development that you suggest would go a long way towards making the most of that opportunity. Hey, maybe we both take the numbers with a grade of salt because of our experiences grading?? :)

Well said, Richard. Thanks for your comment. I think numerical ratings are only valid for wine tasted under the same conditions...

I also think wine ratings can make the most sense when viewing ratings from the SAME rater versus ratings from across raters where you often get lots of variability. find a rater/critic you like and look for directional differences between his/her ratings to get some insight into quality - still subjective and each of us remains final judge of that is Good Wine for us, but something to consider.
