Hi Paul,
Thanks for stopping by; I love the Syrah coming from your vineyard and have both 2004 and 2005 WVH in my cellar now. If you missed it, I reviewed your 2003 Pax in Winecast 51
Looking forward to tasting the '06 and saving up to buy more ;-)

Hi

I'm the wine grower for Pax's Walker Vine Hill Vineyard bottling.

Of course I'm a little biased to the WVH bottling but I bow to Alder Springs 'Terraces' too.

Although you tasted the 2005, I'm so looking forward to the release of the 2006. Pax recently gave me a full bottle barrel sample at his growers' lunch back in June. I took it home and really enjoyed complexity of the young wine, great tannins and bountiful fruit. I remember this vintage well. The vines left nothing behind. Watch out for it and enjoy.

I agree on the alcohol, Jack, and did mention it in the second to last paragraph. When I asked Pax about that, he said the stem content helps balance the wine along with the massive fruit that he ascribed to their vineyard practices. Whatever the formula, he knows how to make some kick-ass Syrah ;-)

I also have notes for some other wines we tasted that were not Syrah that I will post a bit later. Thanks for your comments and for participating in WBW. Now back to the 50 entries to write-up...

Well, I live closer to Siduri than Pax! Ha!

Tim - Most but not all Spring and Falls, Pax has a pickup day and I've been a few times. You get to taste both some finished wines and some from barrel.

Yeah, that Alder Springs vineyard he does magic with.

You don't mention that some of his wines (excl. the 2004 vintage) are quite high in alcohol. Even though he's a master at integrating such - the wines do not show heat - you do need to consider this when popping open a bottle. (A new release, btw, he's trying to do a full flavor syrah that has a low, 12.5% alc.)

And then there's those damn fat bottles - they only fit in magnum racking!

Sorry, Bret ;-)

Next time I will have to get into Siduri and some of the other wineries in the area. I'll warn you via email and we can taste together, if you have the time.

Tim,

I'm insulted that you didn't call!! ;-)

I live even closer to Pax Wines than Siduri! Instead of taking a right on Coffey Ln. to the Pax warehouse, take a left and you're in my neighborhood! Feel free to contact me and I could show you a few of my favorite small wineries around the area.
