Today’s podcast is a return to the virtual tasting format first suggested by a listener back in February. I taste the “Big Three Whites”, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay “live” on the show and invite listeners to taste these wines as they listen. The podcast was also filmed to be the first wine related Vcast or what Apple has been calling “video podcast” released, optimized for Apple’s 5G iPods.

Luis Felipe Edwards, Carmenere, Colchagua, Chile 2003 ($8) – Garnet color with dark fruit and characteristic metallic aromas; blackberry, black pepper and gunmetal flavors with moderate tannins. Very good and a fine value. Score: 8.5/10
By Tim on Oct 29, 2005 in Tasting Notes, Viognier | 1 Comment
McManis Family Vineyards, Viognier, California 2004 ($8) – Golden straw in color, peach and honey aromas with apricots, citrus and mineral flavors. Finishes dry with substantial body and oily mouthfeel. A very good example of Viognier at a bargain price. Score: 8.5/10
Thanks for the tip, Johnee!

HRM Rex-Goliath, “Giant 47 Pound Rooster, Merlot NV ($7) - Very dark ruby with quite a bit of cedar aromas from the oak to go with the black cherry fruit; hot black cherry and plum flavors with less oak than expected from the aromas. A good value, but not up to the quality of the Pinot Noir. Score: 7.5/10

As I’ve mentioned here in the past, I am a fan of Lifehacker and was inspired by their use of Frappr! to start my own group. Although I have another Google Maps application that tracks blog visitors from IP addresses, it would be cool to see where listeners call home and share some pictures. Feel free to just post your name and location or substitute an image of your favorite bottle for the picture.

Just wanted to post about shows 39-43 and what looked like updates to them yesterday if you are using a blog aggregator. Since one of my hosts was down due to a data center failure caused by Hurricane Wilma, I re-pointed all my podcast downloads now in iTunes back to my main host, thus refreshing the content. I will be doing this again for Winecast 43 later tonight when I post the enhanced AAC version of the show. If you are using iTunes or iPodder to get the podcasts, this shouldn’t have any effect. In the future I will link to my main host at the bottom of each podcast post, while pointing the RSS feed to my other host. So if iTunes can’t download the show, you can always download manually from the blog post.

I’ve been lax in updating my Wine & Food Podcasts menu for the past few months, so I took an opportunity this morning. Wow, there are a ton of new shows to listen to including a pair of wine shows from Downunder. I’m updating my subscriptions…

Bodegas Javier Asensio, Crianza, Navarra, Spain 2000 ($17) - Garnet in color with an aromatic plum, spice and eucalyptus nose; nicely concentrated and forward dark fruit flavors with some mint and dusty tannins; excellent balance of fruit and tannin. Needs to breathe for a while to show it’s best, but a very good wine made from 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 20% Tempranillo. A producer to watch for unique and complex wines at bargain prices. Score: 8.5/10
