[...] Like a lot of people who write about wine, I have chosen not to publish negative reviews although my scale allows for low marks. If you do a search here, you’ll not see any wines under 7, although my tasting log has some 6’s recorded. This policy doesn’t seem like such a bad idea watching what is happening with fellow wine blogger Cam from Appellation Australia. Even though he prefaced his notes in the nicest possible way, the winery, Graeme Miller Wines, has threatened legal action based upon his negative review. So if you Google Graeme Miller Wines now, you’ll see 4 negative posts on the first page of 10 results. Nice job keeping the bad review quiet, guys. As more bloggers write about this, the more bad (online) press will spread. This is what makes wine blogging so compelling to me. While the wine press keeps these things silent (for the most part), wine bloggers provide another way for consumers to be better informed before buying wine. This whole episode has me reversing my policy of not posting negative reviews. The next bad wine I taste will show up here with the details of what I didn’t like. With so many good wines on the market, it makes sense to warn readers of the wines to avoid. [...]

[...] Since reading the excellent book Emperor of Wine, I have been debating making a change for my ratings. And, no, it’s not what you probably would guess… I am thinking of dropping all numerical ratings and go back to the more subjective scale inspired by the WSJ’s Tastings column. Who cares if a delicious wine is a 9.5 or 9; both are really excellent and deserve your attention. While I haven’t made a final decision, I am leaning in the direction of few numbers and more words in my tasting notes. What do you think? Do the numerical ratings really help you find beter wines? [...]

[...] Asensio Vinedos y Bodegas, “Torsa” Tinto, Navarra, Spain 2003 ($8) Dark ruby, fresh strawberry/cherry nose with hint of cloves; robust, bright cherry flavors explode on the palette, nicely balanced with light tannins. Would make a nice “house red”. Very good wine and an excellent value. Highly recommended! Score: 8.5/10 [...]

[...] For this event, started with a wine I spied on the by-the-glass selection of the local eatery where I just finished dinner. It was a 2003 Pinot Grigio from Stella of the Umbria region in Italy. I found this wine to be almost clear in color with the slightest hit of straw and a lean fruity nose typical of the varietal. On the palette it had nice citrus and apple flavors, good acidity and a dry, slightly minerally finish. A very good start to this evening’s festivities earning an 8.5/10 on my scale. A quick Google later I found this to be a fine value at only $6 a bottle. [...]

Tim,
Great addition with the scoring system. This give a much better idea how the 'good values' compare with other wines you are tasting.

How about turpentine with dash of bitters? A 0.5 maybe :)

Actually your scale is a 20-point scale if you allow half-point intermediaries (19 points if you don't allow a 0.5).

I know, I know ... this is being picky ... but it's true!

Cheers,
Doug

Yes, sir, it does... on my scale turpentine would receive a "0" ;-)

And doesn't the way the Wine Spectator system works establish a floor so that turpentine would be guaranteed a rating of 50?
